3/28/25 Walking the Emmaus Road

Takeaway: Recognizing Jesus in the midst of disappointment.

“Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.  They asked each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?’” — Luke 24:31-32

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father, as I come before You in this time of devotion, I open my heart to Your presence. In moments of doubt, disappointment, and uncertainty, help me to recognize that You are always near. May this time draw me closer to You and strengthen my trust in Your perfect plan. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection

Disappointment has a way of clouding our vision. When life doesn’t go as planned, it’s easy to feel like God is absent. That’s exactly where we find the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. They had placed all their hope in Jesus, believing He was the Messiah who would redeem Israel. But now, after His crucifixion, they walked away from Jerusalem with their hearts heavy with unfulfilled expectations.

Yet, in the midst of their grief, Jesus Himself came alongside them. He walked with them, listened to them, and patiently revealed the truth of scripture. And still, they didn’t recognize Him. It wasn’t until He broke bread with them that their eyes were opened!

How often do we, like those two disciples, fail to see Jesus in our own moments of disappointment? We focus on what we’ve lost or what we don’t understand, and miss the reality that Jesus is walking beside us. He meets us in our sorrow, speaks truth into our confusion, and patiently waits for us to recognize His presence.

If you find yourself confused or disappointed, take heart. Jesus has not left you. He is near, walking alongside you in ways you may not yet recognize. Keep seeking Him, and in time, your eyes will be opened to the truth—He has been with you all along.

Question

How can you open your heart to seeing Jesus in the midst of your current struggles?

Application

• Turn to Scripture for Clarity. When facing disappointment, spend time in God’s Word, allowing it to rekindle hope and shift your perspective.

• Be Honest with God. Bring your disappointments and doubts to God in prayer, trusting that He listens and understands.

• Break Bread with Others. Share meals, worship together, and encourage one another in faith.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, in my moments of disappointment and confusion, help me to see You. Open my eyes to recognize Your presence, even when my heart is heavy. Let Your Word stir within me, reminding me that You walk with me, even when I don’t feel your presence every moment. Thank You for never leaving me. In Your name, Amen.
